One of the world's leading manufacturers of
automated doors for closing off station platforms and railway carriages
is Kaba Gilgen AG with headquarters in Schwarzenburg, Switzerland.
Among Kaba Gilgen's customers are the metro station of Toulouse,
France, the J.F.Kennedy Airport in New York and the Hong Kong metro.
All automated door systems supplied with Gates' HTD® Long Length
belts.
Achievements
For Gates it all started in 1993 when Kaba Gilgen AG had many problems
with Cracking open-end belts on the automated door frives in the
Toulouse metro. Kaba Gilgen asked Gates whether they could supply
open-end belts offering a higher load capacity and longer service
life. Gates proposed HTD® Long Length belts with 8 mm pitch
and steel cord tensile member. The belts were thoroughly tested
and approved and Kaba Gilgen decided to replace all their open-end
belts for this french metro by Gates' Long Length belts. It was
the start of an ongoing success story.
Prospects
In the year 2050 there will be 300 cities with over a million inhibitants
and 100 megacities counting more than five million citizens. It
goes without saying that in these metropolises efficient organisation
of public traffic systems will be of the utmost importance. As a
manufacturer of automated platform screen doors, Kaba Gilgen AG
is very well positioned in this growing market. Platform screen
doors are increasingly used in all kinds of railway stations to
separate the waiting passengers from the train coming in at high
speed. Platform screen doors simply enhance confort and safety of
passengers.
And that's exactly what the platform screen doors will do on the
light-rail line to the J.F.Kennedy airport in New York. This light-rail,
which will be finished by May 2002 will bring passengers from the
centre of Manhattan to the JFK airport terminals in less than 45mins.
In each station there will be platform screen doors separating platform
and rails. When the train stops integrated automated sliding doors
will open simultaneously with the train doors thus ensuring the
passengers' safety. In total Kaba Gilgen will install 160 automated
sliding doors and 640 emergency exit doors all equipped with Gates'
8 mm pitch HTD® Long Length belts with steel cord and 25 mm
width. In addition, the first stage of the drives will be driven
by Gates PowerGrip® GT 5MR belts supplied to Kaba Gilgen by
Uiker AG, a major Gates Power Transmission Distributor. The pulleys
are also manufactured and suppied by Uiker.
One thing is sure, Kaba Gilgen does not rest on its laurels. In
the course of the next six years Kaba Gilgen will equip 30 stations
of the Hong Kong metro with platform screen doors. We are talking
about 2960 automated doors and kilometres of Long Length 8M HTD®
belts.
Long Length quality
Kaba Gilgen was already convinced of the superior quality of Gates
Long Length belts back in 1993. Gates Long Length rubber belting
is avilable in various sizes, constructions and tooth designs and
covers a wide range of loads, speeds and applications. Thanks to
the sophisticated materials and tooth profiles high power transmission
and positioning accuracy are possible. Gates' rubber Long Length
belting has proven its qualities in the past, and as far as Kaba
Gilgen is concerned, it will do so in the future as well.
