Improve Your Skills with Fluid Power Workshops

It’s time to put on your learning cap. Gates offers four training workshops during 2010 that can greatly improve your skills as a fluid power sales associate. These workshops will expand your knowledge in fluid power technology, Gates product offerings and key marketing and selling tools.

Training takes place at Gates Customer Solutions Center (CSC) in Denver, Colorado. The workshops begin February 1st and are repeated throughout the year. Fees are modest, ranging from $150 to $350. You’ll receive classroom instruction, hands-on training and a written test at the conclusion of each course along with a tour of the CSC – Gates headquarters for customer-focused development in fluid power technology.

Workshops offered include:

Hydraulics - The 2-1/2 day hydraulic products workshop teaches fundamental application engineering skills, hose fabrication principles, thread identification, hose routing/installation and hose cleanliness standards.

Industrial Hose - The 1-1/2 day industrial hose products workshop includes a comprehensive product review and educates associates about fundamental application engineering skills, key product features/benefits, and application and market specific information about each product.

Hydraulics & Industrial Hose - This workshop combines the two above to better leverage your time spent at the CSC.

Value Engineering/Value Analysis (VE/VA) - More advanced sales associates will benefit from this 2-day workshop. It offers a comprehensive understanding of the overall functionality of Gates hydraulic products and the value-added benefits to an original-equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Download the 2010 workshops flier for a complete schedule and course description. Or ask your Gates sales or customer service representative for a copy.

Plan Ahead for IFPE 2011 Expo in Las Vegas

March 22nd, 2011 sounds like a long way off. But it will be here before you know it. Note the date – the start of IFPE 2011, the leading exposition and technical conference dedicated to the integration of fluid power with other technologies for power transmission and motion control applications.

IFPE 2011 will be co-located with CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2011, one of the world’s largest gatherings for the construction industry. The venue is the Las Vegas Convention Center, March 22nd-26th, 2011. Altogether, these shows are expected to attract about 150,000 industry professionals from around the world. More than 500 exhibitors will be displaying their products and services using over 135,000 square feet of exhibit space.

Who attends IFPE? Key decision makers in industries that use fluid power products, including more than 25,000 design engineers in fields like:

  • Off-highway vehicles (construction, mining, forestry, agriculture and lawn and garden)
  • Fluid power and power transmission products
  • Material handling (including overhead cranes, industrial trucks, tractors and stackers)
  • Manufacturing, production automation and machine tools (including chemical, petroleum, metal, plastics and rubber processing)
  • Engineering services
  • Amusement and entertainment technology

Co-sponsors of the show include NFPA (National Fluid Power Association), AEM (Association of Equipment Manufacturers), NRMCA (National Ready Mix Concrete Association), NSSGA (National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association). AEM is the show producer.

IFPE 2011 will also host the prestigious National Conference on Fluid Power (NCFP), which emphasizes new technologies and methods related to improved analysis, design, manufacture and performance of fluid power components and systems for mobile and industrial markets.

This show is a biggie. Gates will be there, and so should you. For more information or to reserve your space, please visit http://www.ifpe.com/.

Order Your Updated Industrial Hose Brochures

For your customers in the Food and Beverage or Petroleum Transfer industries, Gates newest brochures showcase our latest product offerings.

Food and beverage processors can choose from sanitary hoses for grains, powders, flour, dry foods, oils, syrup, dairy, juices, beer, wine, acetic acid products and bulk commodities.

Gates top-of-the-line food and beverage hoses are made with proprietary elastomer blends that provide a smooth interior surface. The silky-smooth tube lets products flow efficiently and won’t discolor or impart any unusual taste or odor. It also makes for easier cleaning and sanitation. These hoses are made with a monofilament polyethylene helix instead of the traditional wire helix, so there’s no metal to rust. And these hoses offer exceptional flexibility and crush resistance.

For the petroleum industry, Gates offers discharge and suction hoses for crude oil, drilling mud, salt and fresh water, diesel fuels, propane, butane, gasoline dispensing and more.

There’s a hose specially made for any petroleum transfer and dispensing application. Tube stocks include nitrile, modified nitrile, neoprene and polyurethane for resistance to fluids. Neoprene, CPE, modified nitrile, SBR and PVC covers handle various external working conditions. And a range of sizes, temperature limits and working pressure ratings match any transfer requirement. In addition, new manufacturing processes are making Gates petroleum hoses more flexible and kink resistant.

Find the hose your customer is looking for in these updated brochures. Download the PDF files or ask your Gates sales or customer service representative for printed copies.

LifeGuard™ Sleeving Featured in Design News

Throughout the year, Design News magazine publishes supplemental editions focused on engineering trends in a particular market segment. These vertical supplements reach design, plant and manufacturing engineers looking for new tools, components and materials, like Gates LifeGuard™ line-of-sight sleeving system.

In the October 2009 “Fluid Power” supplement to Design News, readers learned about LifeGuard sleeving in a full page, 4-color ad.

The November 2009 “Trend Watch” supplement featured a 2-page article about “Protecting Equipment Operators from Hydraulic Fluid Injuries.” Content for this article was contributed by Gates and included details about the engineering and testing that went into product development for LifeGuard sleeving. It also described an application for LifeGuard sleeving – a pole tamper – that dramatized the need for this safety product.

If you have customers in the mobile equipment category, make them aware of the benefits of Lifeguard sleeving. Download the article, or visit www.gates.com/lifeguard to learn more.

Off-Highway Magazine Features Gates Innovation

In an article entitled “Pre-Emptive Strike,” Industrial Vehicle Technology (iVT) editors wrote about a smart new system from Gates called the Hose Diagnostic and Monitoring System (HDMS). It uses sensors to spot hose problems and potential failures before breakdowns occur. The sensors monitor hose temperature and pressure. Feedback lets fleet managers estimate how much hose life remains so they can plan maintenance schedules, control costs and keep equipment running smoothly.

Gates is also using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags on hydraulic hose assemblies. The tags provide fleet operators instant access to hose assembly information for quick ordering of replacement parts.

iVT is published in the United Kingdom, but circulated worldwide to 8,500 engineers who design off-road equipment for markets and applications like construction, mining, forestry and agriculture.

The article appeared in the 2010 iVT Off-Highway Annual Review that was published in November 2009.

MegaClean™ Featured in Hose Cleanliness Story

Hydraulic hose assemblies operate in some pretty nasty environments. But the most potentially harmful one is inside the hose.

Internal contamination can bring down equipment fast. And that means downtime and replacement costs for a new assembly. Along with unhappy customers. Proper cleaning of hydraulic hoses during assembly is vital. And the topic is well covered in an article titled “How to Control Contamination from Hydraulic Hoses” that appeared in the Sept./Oct. 2009 issue of Machinery Lubrication magazine.

Machinery Lubrication reaches an audience of more than 40,000 engineers, maintenance, lubrication, reliability and quality assurance personnel working in fleets, plants and industrial facilities.

The article featured a photo of the MegaClean™ foam projectile launcher, an integral part of the Gates hose cleanliness system.
